One of the best ways to improve heart health is to stop smoking; however, that is a goal much easier said than done! We firmly believe that every smoker can quit, and we will do everything in our power to help you feel empowered and supported along your journey to quitting smoking. Keep reading to find out a few of our top tips to quit smoking!

1. Talk to your doctor about nicotine replacement therapy.

nicotine gum

There are many short and long-term options when it comes to reducing cravings and overcoming nicotine urges, such as nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, nasal sprays, or inhalers. You can even get a prescription for a non-nicotine drug like bupropion or varenicline to support quitting smoking. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about these products!

2. “Practice” before quitting.

Telling yourself to quit smoking cold turkey isn’t always effective so give yourself a few days to “practice”. Write down a list of activities or ways to distract yourself and try a few out. Find safe substitutes for smoking, such as a toothpick or straw, chewing gum, hard candy, or fidget toys. That way, when you quit and feel an urge to smoke, you can revert to your list and choose an option that works for you.

3. Alter your environment to work for you, not smoking.

Simple tasks like removing matches, lighters, and ashtrays from your home and car and unsubscribing from emails and even print flyers and brochures from tobacco companies help to solidify the commitment to quit smoking.

4. Get in relaxation mode.

Stress and anxiety can be triggers for smoking, so utilizing relaxation techniques could be a big help in strengthening your mind from the temptation to smoke. Try guided meditation, go to a yoga class, use visualization, deep breathing and muscle relaxing exercises, get a massage, listen to music, etc.

5. Tell others about your goal.

support

It can be hard to avoid smoking in social situations, so don’t hesitate to tell your friends and family that you’re quitting. Ask them to support you by not smoking around you or offering you a cigarette. Plus, having people to support and motivate you can help when you’re suddenly hit with a craving– give them a call and distract yourself by doing something fun together.

6. Ask for help.

You should never feel ashamed to ask for help, especially when it comes to quitting smoking! You can call the 1-800-QUIT-NOW hotline for around-the-clock support or join a local in-person support group. The American Lung Association has a great Freedom From Smoking program, as well as numerous resources for adults and teens struggling with smoking, vaping, and e-cigarettes. We are happy to help you find the best option to support your needs and goals!
